Ecomuseum & Archive brickworks

The making of.. the 2010 catalogue

The pictures for our new catalogue are shot at a wonderful location. We went back in time, to Boom near Antwerp, around 1910 the center of brick making. Two brick factories  maintained and restored by numerous volunteers. The bricks were handformed, stacked in the drying sheds for 8 weeks and then put in the big circular oven. These ovens used coal for fuel and had a capacity of over 1 million bricks. They were stacked by hand, brick by brick!

You can visit these locations! About fiftheen minutes from the center of Antwerp, the volunteers are happy to give you a tour of the old factory, oven and the drying sheds and share with you their knowledge of way back when...
